2023-2024: A Year In Review

Marching Band: “Studio H

BOA Memphis 2024 | “Studio H”

Harrison’s 2023 competition show, “Studio H,” featured music adaptations of American composer and conductor Bernard Hermann’s collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock for Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960) as well as with Martin Scorsese for Taxi Driver (1976). The show featured a jazzy alto saxophone performance, an aspiring actress in pursuit of an Academy Award, and movie set and film production props (including a camera dolly that rolls on to stage with director calling shots).

Harrison’s 2023 Winter Guard show was entitled “Arts in Motion.”

2022-2023: A Year in Review

Here are the highlights from the 2022-2023 band program!

Marching Band: Midnight in Gotham

Midnight in Gotham featured costumed characters from DC Comics’ Batman series.

Harrison’s 2022 competition show, Midnight in Gotham, featured an array of costumed villains from DC Comics’ Batman series, including Harley Quinn and Cat Woman in the Color Guard, a percussion section of Joker characters and the front pit dressed as the Riddler. A haunting soprano saxophone performance featured Poison Ivy emerging from a neon-colored hiding place, then strolling around and through the marching band ranks – all while the band demonstrated precision marching, choreographed steps, and a visible feeling of enjoyment.

Show music included Theme from Batman by Danny Elfman, Audivi Media Nocte by Oliver Waespe, Finale from Batman by Danny Elfman, Can’t Fight City Halloween by Michael Giacchino, Chase Noir from Batman Forever by Elliot Goldenthal, Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande, and Victory from Batman Forever by Elliot Goldenthal.

Marching Band competitions and awards for 2022 included:

Winter Guard: Bound

HHS Competition Ensembles Earn First Place Finishes

Two Harrison Bands competition ensembles completed their spring seasons at regional championship events in April, both capturing first place finishes.

The Harrison Indoor Percussion Ensemble (HIPE) earned first place honors in the Percussion Scholastic Concert A division at the Georgia Indoor Percussion Association’s championship event held at Alpharetta High School. HIPE earned an overall score of 86.85 in the event to capture the first place spot. The score was the ensemble’s highest of the 2023 competition season.

HIPE performed its 2023 competition show entitled “A World Entirely Your Own.” The show includes “Sweet Dreams are Made of This” as interpreted by Emily Browning and the Eurythmics, “Pure Imagination” from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” and “False Awakening Suite” from Dream Theater.

Harrison’s Winter Guard traveled to Chattanooga to compete at the SAPA Championships, where the team finished first in the Scholastic A division. A total of 32 teams competed in the Scholastic A division. The HHS Winter Guard earned a combined score of 85.495, continuing their season-long accomplishment of improving scores.

Winter Guard performed its 2023 competition show entitled “Bound” featuring music by Christina Aguilera.

Competition Ensembles Excel at Weekend Events

Harrison’s Winter Guard and Indoor Percussion ensembles enjoyed excellent weekend events, excelling at nearby competitions.

Harrison’s Indoor Percussion Ensemble (HIPE) finished in second place at the GIPA competition at South Forsyth High School. HIPE earned a score of 82.9, increasing by 2.4 points from preliminaries to final performances. HIPE performed its 2023 competition show entitled “A World Entirely Your Own.” The show includes “Sweet Dreams are Made of This” as interpreted by Emily Browning and the Eurythmics, “Pure Imagination” from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” and “False Awakening Suite” from Dream Theater.

Harrison Indoor Percussion Ensemble (HIPE) earned a second-place finish at the GIPA event at South Forsyth HS.

Performing at the WGI Atlanta area championships, Winter Guard advanced to finals at the event and earned a seventh place finish. The squad continued their season-long record of improving scores, finishing with a 83.18. Winter Guard performed its 2023 competition show entitled “Bound” featuring music by Christina Aguilera.

HIPE wraps up its 2023 competition season on April 1 with a performance at GIPA Championships at Alpharetta High School. Winter Guard travels to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga April 1-2 for SAPA regional championships.

Harrison’s high-flying Winter Guard reached finals and earned a 7th place finish at WGI Atlanta Regional Championships.
