After-School Practice Reminders

Here are some tips and reminders for after-school practice now that many are back at school:

  • Students who are face-to-face should bring a snack to eat right after school.  Granola bars or fruit are excellent choices to give them energy for practice.
  • All students will need water so face-to-face students should plan ahead and pack an extra water bottle in their backpacks specifically for practice.
  • Students should bring a change of comfortable clothes, if needed.  Sneakers with thick socks are a must for marching. Watch the weather to see if a hoodie, sweatshirt or jacket may be needed.
  • Directors will share more information about how temperature screening will be conducted.  For now, students who are coming from home should expect a similar drop-off procedure as before unless told otherwise.

Fall Banquet Changes

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will be unable to have a dedicated Fall Banquet. While we cannot have our Fall Banquet, we are looking at ways to recognize all those who have participated and especially those Seniors who have put so much in to our award winning Marching Band program. Keep watching the band website, social media, eblast and texts for more information and updates as we move through the rest of the Fall for any changes or announcements.

Band Rehearsal Instructions

Updated Medical Forms Required. Updated and notarized forms are due for all Marching Band participants on first day of in-person rehearsals. We will have a notary available on-site at the first rehearsal. Download and complete your form in advance, then bring the completed form to the first rehearsal.

Drop-off and Pick-up Instructions. There are special instructions for student drivers and for band member drop-off and pick-ups. Please familiarize yourself with these before traveling to rehearsal. Mr. Ray covers these instructions beginning at 24:40 of this video.

Required Wear

0
"What should I wear?," is not a question band members ask for band events. Band members sport required wear for band events.

** Please include name, sizes, instrument played/guard on ALL order forms. If ordering jacket, please include preferred name for embroidery.  Allow for size  growth to maximize your investment.

The band practices in grey t-shirts and shorts. T-shirts can be purchased through Required Wear or at other locations.

*PRACTICE GREY TEES– These are worn for practice during band camps and regular rehearsals for woodwind, brass, percussion, drumline, and drum majors.  Guard will need to check with their director regarding their practice attire.  Typically, they are ordered by July 1st after the band kick off in late April. This year, however, due to COVID delays, the order date is to be determined.  At least 3 practice tees are recommended when ordering. Any number may be ordered.  They can be bought cheaper thru Required Wear than most anywhere else.  Short sleeves. Will want to have 1-2 on hand until others are ordered/delivered thru band.

Navy shorts for under-uniform.
RWYA shirts for under-uniform wear. These must be purchased through required wear.

*UNDER UNIFORM– On Friday nights and during competitions and other special events, students wear items under their uniforms to make for easy removal.  They will need a RWYA ( Remember Who You Are) shirt and navy shorts. 1 shirt/1 short is required, but you can order as many as you would like.

*WITH UNIFORMBlack MTX shoes are required by marchers/percussion and must be ordered thru band. Guard have their own shoes that must be ordered thru guard.  Freshman and students new to band should be sized on uniform fitting day which is typically during the first week of band camp. Black socks are worn with MTX shoes….black socks are not ordered thru band. They are to be bought by parents. Marchers have different preferences on sock thickness and make and what they need depends on how their shoes fit.

Polo shirts embroidered with the Harrison Band logo are required for band travel.

*GLOVES– Woodwind students wear black fingerless gloves.  Brass students wear black gloves that have whole fingers. Drum majors wear white gloves with whole fingers.  All gloves must be ordered thru band.  2-4 pair are recommended to start.

*POLO- Polo shirts are required for every band student; including band students who are not marchers, and also members of guard. They are worn on band trips and competitions.  These are embroidered with “ Harrison Bands”  and must be ordered thru band.

*WINDBREAKER JACKET– These are embroidered with name ( if the preference for what name is put on order form) and must be ordered thru band.  They are worn over uniforms frequently and this should be considered in the size selected. Required for all marchers/percussion/guard.

* TOBOGGAN–  Not required, but recommended. These are the only toboggans allowed to be worn with the marching uniform. “ Harrison Bands” is embroidered on them. Must be ordered thru band.

(Special thanks to Nancy Cheatham Brock for this article. Nancy is a multi-year leader of our band required wear program.)

Hooded wind-breaker jackets can be worn over the uniform during cold weather, so consider a larger size to accommodate such when ordering.
Pull-over toboggan hats are great cold-weather wear.
